Sexuality and the Media Program

Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of how the media influences sexuality.

Rationale
Unfortunately, the media often portrays sexuality on the glamorous side, largely ignoring the realities and consequences of sexual behavior. The effect the media has on our behavior, ideology, and relationships is significant. Education can help individuals begin to recognize how the media influences their sexual health and happiness.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Sexuality and the Media Education, participants will:

  • Assess the role the media plays in their daily life
  • Discuss values and messages we receive about sexuality from the media
  • Observe examples of how the media portrays sex and sexuality
  • Discuss how unrealistic sexual depictions can foster dangerous consequences
  • Understand the importance of forming our own unique ideas about sex and sexuality
