Sexuality Education Program

Standard
Participants will gain an understanding of the benefits of sexuality education and recognize the characteristics and methodology of programs that have proven to have an impact on behavior.

Rationale
Planned Parenthood recognizes that in order for individuals to make responsible and informed decisions about their sexual health and behavior, they need educational programs that address abstinence, safer sex practices, and contraception. Effective sexuality education programs provide participants with communication, negotiation, and refusal skills. Comprehensive sexuality education does not hasten the onset of intercourse, or increase the frequency or number of sexual partners.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Sexuality Education, participants will:

  • Understand that sexuality includes all of the verbal and non-verbal messages we receive about sex from a very young age
  • Understand the value and benefits of effective sexuality education
  • Discuss the reasons and misconceptions that lead some to oppose sexuality education
  • Recognize the teaching methods that have proven effective in both delaying the onset of sexual behavior as well as reducing risky sexual activity
  • Understand the multiple factors that must be addressed to create informed awareness among youth
  • Understand the need to implement balanced sexuality programs and messages into school curricula
