Sexual Harassment Program

Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of what sexual harassment is, how to handle harassing situations, and how to be aware of potentially harassing behaviors.

Rationale
Sexual harassment has been the focus of increasing attention on school campuses and in the workplace. Title VII and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act prohibit sexual discrimination at school or work, yet sexual harassment continues to be a topic of great debate. Through education, participants will begin to understand that sexual harassment is truly in the "eye of the beholder" and as individuals, we are responsible for our own sexual behaviors and attitudes.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Sexual Harassment Education, participants will:

  • Define sexual harassment
  • Identify differences between flirting and harassing behaviors
  • Understand that the victim's perception of the behavior is important and not the intent of the behavior
  • Discuss gender bias, stereotypes, and power issues associated with sexual harassment
  • Identify when sexual harassment is illegal
  • Identify the steps to take when you are sexually harassed
  • Discuss how an individual can create a work and learning environment that is comfortable and non-threatening
