Safer Sex Program

Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the possible risks associated with sexual activity, as well as the various methods to reduce those risks.

Rationale
1 out of every 4 people will contract a sexually transmitted infection at some time during their life. Safer sex refers to reducing the risk of infection or unplanned pregnancy. By practicing safer sex, couples can reduce their risks while still enjoying sexual activities.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Safer Sex Education, participants will:

  • Identify the wide range of sexual behaviors and the relative risk of each for transmission of HIV, STI's, and unplanned pregnancy
  • Discuss how to practice safer sex, including how to make safer sex behaviors more pleasurable
  • Assess their own behaviors for risk of HIV, STI's, and pregnancy, and their personal reasons for practicing safer sex
  • Identify the barriers to safer sex behaviors, including cultural attitudes, alcohol, and drug use
  • Recognize that continuous abstinence is the only 100% effective method to protect your sexual health
  • Describe available testing procedures, as well as where and how to access them
