Menopause Program
Standard Participants will demonstrate an understanding of menopause and the perimenopausal transition as a multi-faceted health issue having physical, emotional, social, and sexual components.
Rationale Menopause is the culmination of changes that begin in the ovaries as early as the mid- to late thirties and may continue for several years after the last menses. During perimenopause, 75% - 85% of women experience symptoms. Education is helpful in clarifying questions about drug and alternative therapies. Learning strategies for dealing with symptoms can help women accept and adapt to the changes of menopause.
Performance Indicators As a result of Menopause Education, participants will:
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of perimenopause
- Understand the connection between hormones and symptoms
- Evaluate hormone replacement therapy and alternative approaches
- Recognize the effects of the menopausal transition on sexuality, self-esteem, and sexual response
- Learn strategies for dealing with symptoms including nutrition, exercise and stress reduction
- Appreciate menopause as the natural continuum in a woman's reproductive life
