HIV/AIDS Program

Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and treatment as well as the physical, social and cultural impact of infection with HIV.

Rationale
Anyone can become infected with HIV if they participate in behaviors or activities that transmit HIV with an infected individual. When these activities are combined with feelings of invulnerability, the risk of infection with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections increases.

Performance Indicators
As a result of HIV/AIDS Education, participants will:

  • Identify disease progression and the difference between HIV and AIDS
  • Identify behaviors that put an individual at risk for contracting HIV
  • Describe prevention methods, including abstinence
  • Understand the importance of sexual responsibility and the barriers that may hinder communication and healthy decision-making
  • Describe the physical, emotional, and interpersonal consequences of infection
  • Options for HIV testing and counseling and how to access them
