Assertiveness Program

Standard
Participants will understand the benefits of being assertive and learn how to become more assertive communicators.

Rationale
Being able to speak one's mind, to honestly share feelings and ideas in a non-offensive manner, is a skill that many individuals lack. Whether at school, work, or home, assertiveness is important to a person's well-being and success. Through education, individuals can understand the dangers of non-assertive behaviors and learn how to be more assertive in their daily lives.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Assertiveness Training Education, participants will:

  • Assess their individual behavior in various situations
  • Define assertiveness
  • Contrast assertiveness with "aggressive" and "passive" behavior
  • Identify the consequences of aggressive and passive behavior
  • Understand that all individuals have basic assertive rights
  • Understand that assertiveness includes both verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Practice verbal and non-verbal components of assertive communication
  • Understand that assertiveness is a life-long skill that can always be practiced and improved upon
