Abstinence Program

Standard
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of abstinence as an effective method of avoiding pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Rationale
Teens often receive mixed messages about sex. These "mixed messages" can be overwhelming for the teen who faces the decision of whether or not to become sexually active. While there are many ways to avoid pregnancy and STIs, abstinence remains the only choice that is 100% effective. Through open discussion, teens can discover the benefits of choosing abstinence.

Performance Indicators
As a result of Abstinence Education, participants will:

  • Understand what it means to abstain from something
  • Understand sexual abstinence as a means of avoiding pregnancy and STIs
  • Recognize the difference between perfect and typical use
  • Identify why teens choose to delay sexual activity
  • Identify why teens choose to become sexually active
  • Recognize how an individual develops skills to make abstinence work
  • Identify the reasons abstinence can break or fail
  • Recognize that abstinence is always available to anyone who chooses it
