April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Sexual Assault Services of PPNCNY will hold two events in recognition of this month.
Denim Day
Monday, April 23, 2012 (or the day of your choosing!)
Everywhere!
$5 Suggested Donation
Wearing JEANS on Denim Day reminds us of the harmful attitudes still prevalent about sexual violence. Denim Day was established after a 1999 Italian Supreme Court ruling overturned a rape conviction simply because the woman was wearing jeans when she was raped. The court’s reasoning rested on the belief that it would have been impossible for the attacker to remove the jeans by himself, so the victim must have facilitated her own assault. How can you participate?
§ Declare April 23, 2012 Denim Day at your business or organization. If that day doesn’t work, choose one that does!
§ Sexual Assault Services will provide you with posters to hang in your offices to promote Denim Day,
§ Choose a coordinator to collect a $5 suggested donation from anyone who would like to participate,
§ Sexual Assault Services will provide you with special Denim Day pins, so that anyone who comes into contact with your employees or members will know that they support victims of sexual violence.
§ Encourage everyone in your organization to wear jeans on Denim Day.
§ After Denim Day is over, bring or mail your collected donations to Sexual Assault Services.
