Planned Parenthood of New Mexico (PPNM) was founded in 1964 and incorporated on September 29, 1964, under the name of Bernalillo County Planned Parenthood. The name was changed to Planned Parenthood of the Rio Grande in 1993, and Planned Parenthood of New Mexico in 1995. Planned Parenthood of New Mexico became a statewide affiliate in 1995.
In 2007, medical services were provided 23,502 patients. These services included annual exams, STI testing and treatment, pregnancy testing, abortion, tubal ligation, vasectomy, contraception, colposcopy, cryotherapy, HIV testing, provision of contraceptive education and supplies, options education and referrals for health and social needs.
In 2007, PPNM provided educational services to more than 6,000 adults, school-aged children, and youth serving programs. These include presentations in schools, churches and community centers, rental of films and videos, consultations with teachers and group leaders, and public-service advertising. In addition, the affiliate houses a variety of education materials available for public use.
The Board of Directors of PPNM oversees the operation of the affiliate. A staff of approximately 60 full and part-employees and a group of dedicated volunteers participate in the delivery of PPNM services.
PPNM is one of more than 100 self-supporting Planned Parenthood affiliates. The agency budget is comprised of patient fees, community financial support and grants. Patient fees are collected as cash payments or reimbursements from Medicaid and insurance companies. The affiliate receives federal and state agency funding as well as contributions from private foundations and donors.
All medical services are provided in accordance with high medical standards set forth by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and are closely monitored by the Medical Director. The affiliate is evaluated on a regular basis by PPFA to assure that PPNM meets all standards for accreditation. PPNM went through this process in April of 2007 and received a four-year accreditation. PPNM's Standard & Guidelines, as well as other, manuals were recommended or used as models for other affiliates.
