Our History

A History of Success

In 1933, the Mother's Health Center of Locust Valley was founded by five volunteers, a doctor, and a nurse. These movers and shakers were committed to helping women who wanted to prevent unwanted pregnancy and make decisions about the size of their families. During its first year, this forerunner to Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) made birth control counseling and supplies available to the community’s then predominantly white married population, serving nearly 500 patients and operating on a budget of less than $5,000.

Strengthening Families & Building Communities

Today, one in four women across the country has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at some point in her life.

Here in Nassau County, 14,000 people receive family planning, pregnancy testing, prenatal care, and sexually transmitted infection testing each year. Through our educational programs, 30,000 more gain the skills to make smart, well-informed, and safe choices. Eighty-six percent of patients rely on us for some form of subsidized care, and the majority of our education workshops are offered free of charge.

We also work actively across Long Island to engage and mobilize community members in support of reproductive rights.
