Love Carefully, Wear A Condom
Planned Parenthood of Nassau County says "hooray for love" on Valentine's Day -- and every other day! But we urge you to love carefully.
Each year, more than 15 million people in the United States will be diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection. An every day, thousands more unintentionally become pregnant.
Using condoms consistently and correctly dramatically reduces these risks. Condoms work. They offer the best protection against STIs and are an effective and inexpensive method of birth control. Consider these facts:
-
Consistent use of condoms is 85-100% effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission and 85-95% effective in preventing unintended pregnancy.
-
Store condoms in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Don’t keep condoms in temperatures above 85 degrees. And always check the expiration date!
-
Remember to only use water-based lubricants with latex condoms. Avoid oil-based lubricants such as cold cream, mineral oil, petroleum jelly, body lotions, massage oil or baby oil -- these can damage latex condoms.
-
Got a latex allergy? No problem -- use a synthetic condom!
-
Plan in advance to use protection and be prepared for the unexpected. If the condom breaks, come to Planned Parenthood for emergency contraception (EC) as soon as possible (within 5 days).
-
Don’t know how to use a condom? Ask a Planned Parenthood staff member. We also sell condoms in our health center centers.
