Anti-Choice Constitutional initiative is approved for signature gathering

On Wednesday, September 2nd, the Attorney General’s office approved CI-102 for signature gathering. This dangerous initiative grants constitutional due process protections to fertilized eggs and would severely harm our constitutionally recognized right to privacy.

While CI-102 specifically amends due process rights, it essentially grants government oversight and protection from the moment of conception severely restricting women and families’ right to privacy. CI-102 would give the government an interest in every pregnancy from conception to birth.  Access to emergency contraception, in vitro fertilization and birth control will all be jeopardized by this amendment.

Montanans have already shown their strong opposition to restricting the right to privacy, with a similar initiative, which fell 20,000 signatures short of qualifying for the 2008 ballot.  Similar amendments failed in the 2007 and 2009 legislative sessions.  Planned Parenthood worked tirelessly to defeat these dangerous amendments in 2007, 2008, and 2009 and with your help we will do it again in 2010!
