Planned Parenthood By The Numbers
July 2008
Abortions in Minnesota have declined 1.6 percent since 2006. Abortions among minors have also decreased by 6 percent. This is good news for the state of Minnesota and underscores the success of public health programs geared toward prevention.
Planned Parenthood has focused on prevention for 80 years. 95 percent of the services we provide focus on prevention.
Planned Parenthood served nearly 65,000 people last year. This is an increase of 13 percent over 2006. What this means is that more Minnesotans than ever are in need of health care services and PPMNS is the safety net health care provider they turn to for the care they need.
Nearly 76 percent of PPMNS patients are very low income and likely to qualify for public insurance programs.
We saw growth in a variety of services that we provide to our patients, with the most significant increases occurring among patients seeking preventive care. Colposcopies increased by 28 percent, tests to detect herpes increased by 116 percent and tests for HPV increased by 315 percent.
We have also seen a shift toward highly effective, longer-term methods of birth control. Our patients requesting IUDs, for instance, increased by 150 percent last year. IUDs are the most effective reversible method of birth control available and can be left in place for anywhere from 1 year to 12 years depending on the type of IUD selected. This is just one example of how Planned Parenthood works every day to reduce the need for abortion by promoting access to effective, affordable contraception.
Planned Parenthood’s education department served more than 27,000 participants last year through intensive education programs, parent/child retreats and community outreach.
