Calhoun County Coalition for Inclusion (3Ci) is a gathering of anyone and everyone who wants to work to create a welcoming, inclusive and affirming community for LGBTQ youth. Led by Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan, 3Ci is a coalition of churches, mental health professionals, educators, social service agencies, and other community members in the effort to respond to the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth and their families throughout Calhoun County. All orientations and ages are welcome.
3Ci started in 2008 in response to youth in Calhoun County who were becoming a greater and greater risk for substance abuse, homelessness, and even teen suicides as a result of not having support systems in their lives while questioning their own value and sexual orientation.
In just one year, about 35 active members and hundreds more on our email listserv joined together throughout the year to implement Calhoun County’s first Day of Silence/Break the Silence event in April 2008 and the first-ever Peace Prom in October 2008. These two events signified a new movement in the community to provide safe and educational places to meet new people, affirm our own identities no matter where we are in the rainbow, and learn more about resources in our community.
Our response to the identified risk areas is three-fold. First, our Faith Action Team is engaging communities to discuss each of our roles in supporting our young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Second, our Service Referral Team is developing an efficient and culturally sensitive support and referral system specific to the needs of LGBTQ people. Third, the Youth Action Team is developing strategies to support gay-straight alliances in schools and sustain present gay-straight alliances for future members, as well as helping dialogue with their schools about ensuring safe spaces for everyone. Our goal is to reduce bullying, substance abuse and the risk of suicide with our young LGBTQ people and their allies. Furthermore, we hope that with this coalition, Calhoun County will truly become a more inclusive and diverse community.
3Ci meets the first Tuesday of every month in Battle Creek. Email inclusion.coalition@yahoo.com, call Jennette at 269.372.1205 ext. 6531 or Visit our website for more information.
