Letters from the CEO

Spring 2011

From the Desk of John W. Nugent, President & CEO

Take a look at what was really at stake this year: it’s enough to make you scream.

In the most devastating attacks in recent years, conservatives in Washington, DC attempted to completely defund Planned Parenthood.

In Maryland, a federal funding ban would have devastated our clients – and our clinics.

Without Title X funding, Medicaid reimbursements and federal grants, your local Planned Parenthood offices may have shut down.

Thankfully, our friends in the US Senate came to our rescue. If you have not already done so, please call Senators Mikulski and Cardin and thank them for speaking out in defense of Planned Parenthood. Thank them for defending your right to affordable, high-quality health care.

Call Senator Barbara Mikulski at (202) 224-4654.

Call Senator Ben Cardin at (202) 224-4524.

Despite the clear support our clients, supporters, and advocates have shown for Planned Parenthood during our federal budget fight, state legislatures are stepping up their attacks – as we have already seen in Kansas and Indiana. And we have yet to learn the outcome of HR 3 – a bill that threatens to take away private insurance coverage for abortion from millions of women across the country.

It’s hard to predict when these ideological attacks will end – but I am grateful to have you on our side.

I am pleased to share with you our local legislative success story. Despite the anti-choice attacks on the national level and within our own state, Maryland continues to be a leader in protecting access to services.

Thanks to your support, we were able to work with our legislative allies in the Maryland General Assembly to stop the advancement of 10 anti-choice bills.

Those bills included measures that would have:

• Required reporting of personal information about women’s abortion decisions to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

• Eliminated access to abortion services throughout Maryland by imposing unnecessary regulations on providers.

• Prohibited the provision of any family planning or abortion services through a Personhood Amendment to the Maryland Constitution.

We saw a record-breaking number of anti-choice bills and we stopped every bill. Plus, Maryland went against the national grain and expanded access to family planning services.

With the enactment of the Family Planning Works Act, more Maryland women will be able to access family planning services through the Maryland Medicaid Program, thanks to Delegates Mizeur, Smigiel, Ross, and Senator Pugh.

While you are on our website, take a look at our upcoming events and Fiscal Year 2010 annual report, and see for yourself the hard work we are doing on your behalf, right here in Maryland.

I want you to know that we are determined to increase access to Planned Parenthood services in our state.

Will you make a donation today so that Planned Parenthood of Maryland will be here tomorrow?

Sincerely,

John W. Nugent
