Summertime Moving Fun!

Summer time offers many exciting opportunities to be outdoors and enjoy the sun. Around Baltimore City, there are lots of free and low-cost activities that will keep you active and moving- exercise made easy!

Summer concert series. Lots of good music going on around the city. Get out of the house and get your dance on! Click here for the schedule and location of free concerts around the city.

Walking Clubs. Joining a walking clubs is a great way to meet other people who are striving to be stay healthy and lose weight.  Park Heights Community Health Alliance hosts a Walk-Jog-Run program that you can join and begin a new workout routine. 

Another fun walking adventure is to join a free Heritage Walk that is a guided walking tour of the historic sights around the inner harbor. Free walks are offered daily beginning at 10 am Mondays through Fridays and also on weekends beginning at 1:00 pm. Just stop by the Visitor Center at the Baltimore Inner Harbor during business hours to sign up and take a walk!

Free Day at the Museum. Many Museums have free admission days in Baltimore City.  Visiting a museum for one of the easiest and fun ways to get in a good walk. Especially if you like art or want to explore a new way of thinking.  The Reginald F. Lewis Museum located downtown near the inner harbor, has a great exhibit called Material Girls. This art show features unique creations by women artists who use lots of recycled materials from hair combs to old tires! The museum also offers an area for kids to explore art, so you can bring the whole family along for a day. 

Other museums that offer free days are the American Visual Arts Museum, the Walters Arts Museum, and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Swim. Swimming is an excellent exercise because it uses all of your major muscle groups and is a good cardio workout too, especially if you suffer from joint pain or find walking and jogging too intense.  Click this link for a schedule and location of pools around the city. You can also design your own fun activities for you and your family.

• Go to the playground and have a swinging contest. See who can swing the highest and the longest.

• Take a daily walk as a family. Choose a different neighborhood or part of the city that you have never visited.

• Have a family chore day where everyone works together fixing and cleaning a part of your home that needs mending.

• Have a family-cooking day where everyone shares in making dinner.
