History of Planned Parenthood in the Sacramento Region:

In 1974, a year after the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, Planned Parenthood Sacramento County became one of the first to provide abortion services.

In 1982, Planned Parenthood Sacramento County and Planned Parenthood Yolo County merged to become Planned Parenthood of Sacramento Valley (PPSV). PPSV started with two clinics; however, there remained a large need for family planning services. Each year passed showing that three local counties were in the bottom ten of those meeting family planning needs. To better serve the community, PPSV sought new funding sources, looking for community partners (including local health departments and community groups) and by 1989 expanded to ten health centers, a surgical center, separate administration office, and an education center. With this expansion, Planned Parenthood was able to serve four times as many clients and increased its operating budget six fold.

During the 1990s the health industry was transformed into a greater managed care system and PPSV could not continue to meet the growing needs of the patients. In order to improve our services and solidify our role in the community as trusted, competent health providers, in 1995 PPSV merged with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. This merge allowed health centers in the Sacramento region to expand services to include men, prenatal care, and primary care.
