Fresno Teen Pregnancy Prevention Recognition
The Fresno County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Collaborative (the Collaborative) is a diverse coalition of individuals, groups, and agencies dedicated to reducing the number of teenage and unintended pregnancies through the provision of effective educational opportunities. In addition, the Collaborative is committed to promoting responsible parenting including encouraging fathers to become involved in the economic, social and emotional development of their children. Organizations and agencies with representatives on the Collaborative include the Fresno County Department of Community Health, Fresno County Children and Family Services, the Fresno Unified School District, Fresno Barrios Unidos, Proteus, Inc. and WestCare California.
On May 1, 2008, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, the Collaborative will host a special event at the offices of the Fresno County Office of Education that will honor five outstanding individuals. Annually the month of May is recognized as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. This event is designed to recognize individuals in the community who have taken action towards supporting and providing teenage pregnancy prevention programs and services, which reflect the values and principles of the Collaborative.
Requirements to be nominated are that the individual must be from (or provide services in) Fresno County and must have worked with teenage pregnancy prevention services for at least one year. Awards will be presented in the following categories:
- Volunteer/Community Member: This person has volunteered time to support pregnancy prevention in his/her community through different community service projects.
- Educator/Teacher: This person supports teenage pregnancy programs and services by allowing class space for instruction and advocating for teenage pregnancy prevention programs in the classroom.
- Youth/Peer Educator: This person works in his/her community providing advocacy and other service-learning projects and sets an example for other youth.
- Agency Representative: This person dedicates their efforts in supporting teenage pregnancy prevention programs by participating in local events, meetings, advocating in community and works together to find funding for teenage pregnancy prevention programs.
- Legislator: This person works hard to support teenage pregnancy prevention programs in Fresno County by signing letters of support and participating in local events.
A panel of community leaders will review all applications and select one individual for each of the five categories. The day of the event will offer a program honoring each selected individual by category.
