History of Planned Parenthood in the Central Valley:
In 1971 a group of volunteers organized and incorporated Planned Parenthood of Fresno, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The first office opened for pregnancy testing & counseling in the First Christian Church at Tuolumne and N Streets in downtown Fresno. In 1972 the organization moved to the College Religious Center across from Fresno State and began offering birth control. In November of ‘72 Planned Parenthood of Fresno rented its first medical office near Fruit & McKinley and added community education services. In 1977 the organization purchased a building at 633 N. Van Ness and relocated its medical & education services. This is the current site of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte’s Regional Administration and Education offices. In 1983 family planning services were expanded to Merced and the agency changed its name to Planned Parenthood of Central California. In 1985 a clinic was opened in Bakersfield followed by a Madera Clinic in 1986 and a second location in Fresno was established in 1991. In 1995 the second location called the First Street Clinic moved to a new location and expanded to provide primary care services to our clients.
In 1997, Planned Parenthood of Central California merged with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, providing a more stable funding base and greater resources for growth. Today our health and education services division has expanded with the building of the largest Planned Parenthood Health Center in the country located at 650 N. Fulton in downtown Fresno, and the organization has just broken ground to build a new Health Center in Merced to meet the growing demand for quality reproductive health & education services.
