Cancer Screen
Our Services
All sites perform clinical breast exams and refer for mammograms as needed to screen for breast cancer; all sites perform Pap tests to screen for cervical cancer; all sites perform genital exams to screen men for testicular cancer. We are now using testing for certain types of HPV (wart virus) to help interpret the Pap results.
Colposcopy/cryotherapy
If your Pap smear is not normal, a special test called colposcopy may be recommended. This is like looking at your cervix with a microscope while you are in the same position as you are in for when you are here for a Pap test. During the test some samples, or biopsies, may be taken so your tissue can be examined further. Depending on the results, you may be asked to return to the Health Center for treatment of your cervix by freezing it. This is called cryotherapy. This usually gets rid of the abnormal cells, but you will need more frequent Pap tests afterward to be sure of this.
