Protecting Their Future: Preparing Parents to Talk about HPV
Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) launched our first-ever live, interactive webcast entitled “Protecting Their Future: Preparing Parents to Talk about HPV.” on Thursday, May 10th.
The webcast offered parents information and tips on talking to their children about the human papillomavirus (HPV), the new HPV vaccine (Gardasil), as well as other sexual health issues. PPLM Medical Director Dr. Karen Lifford and PPLM Parent Education Manager Amy Cody presented for about 20 minutes.
The new HPV vaccine, Gardasil, is recommended for girls aged 9 through 26, and has proven to be extremely safe and effective at preventing four major strains of the HPV virus, a common sexually transmitted infection that affects one in four women. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, which kills about 3,700 women every year in the United States.
The webcast is part of PPLM’s Parent Education Program, Let’s be Honest, and was the first in what will be a series of PPLM webcasts about sexual health issues.
