The highly-successful Promotoras Comunitarias Training Program was created to address the lack of access to reproductive health care and sexuality information in the Latino community. Promotoras are Latinas who are knowledgeable and respected in the community and who provide culturally relevant health education and advocate for underserved populations to receive appropriate services.

After rigorous training, Planned Parenthood Promotoras reach out to their communities to educate their peers on our core curriculum that covers the following topics: Self-esteem; Values and Sexuality; How to Speak to Your Children about Sexuality; Reproductive and Sexual Anatomy; Birth Control; Sexually Transmitted Infections; HIV Prevention; and Women’s Health.

Families Talking Together is an evidence-based curriculum for parents that prevents adolescent sexual risk behaviors. Created by NYU Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health, this one-session curriculum provides tools for parents to talk with their teens and help prevent too-early pregnancies.

Family rejection has been identified as an indicator of negative health and achievement outcomes for LGBT youth. Familias Diversas, Unidas y Sanas is a four-session curriculum that focuses on debunking myths about the LGBT community and promoting a welcoming environment at home and in the community for LGBT children and relatives.

Since its launch in 1991, more than 1,000 women from different parts of Los Angeles have been trained to act as community health promoters. To date, the program has reached more than 200,000 residents of Los Angeles County.

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles' Promotoras Comunitarias program serves the communities surrounding most of our health centers.
