Peer Advocate Program

The Peer Advocate Program, based in Boyle Heights, is located in an area of Los Angeles identified as a “hot spot” for teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Planned Parenthood has partnered with local schools to implement a youth development model that addresses unplanned pregnancy and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

Peer Advocates make a year-long commitment to train and work at Planned Parenthood to provide education and outreach to their peers. This “youth-to-youth” strategy debunks common myths surrounding sex and pregnancy at their source, opens the lines of communication among students, and improves access to high-quality health services and community resources. Peer Advocates who participate in the program also develop positive decision-making and job skills for their future.
