HotSpots for October 1–31, 2009

HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Maryland  10/31/09  A staff member from a Planned Parenthood health center received harassing mail at her private residence. The envelope contained anti-choice literature and graphic pictures.

Colorado  10/31/09  A group of 16 new protesters came to a Planned Parenthood health center for the last day of 40 Days for Life. No incidents occurred.

Delaware  10/30/09  A protester aggressively approached staff providing escort assistance to patients at a Planned Parenthood health center. The protester twice attempted to block staff's path on the sidewalk.

New York  10/29/09  Protesters stood blocking the sidewalk of a Planned Parenthood health center and refused to move. Police were called, but the protesters left before they could arrive. Officers indicated that if the situation occurs again, there will be arrests.

Colorado  10/27/09  A man and woman at a Planned Parenthood health center were pushing a baby stroller and yelling anti-choice statements at staff. Police responded and spoke with the man and woman.

Oklahoma  10/26/09  Two Planned Parenthood health centers received religious, anti-choice mail.

Illinois  10/23/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received a poster with anti-choice rhetoric and a depiction of babies being "rescued" from an alley.

Missouri  10/23/09  An anti-choice vigil was held at a Planned Parenthood health center.

New York  10/22/09  Anti-choice protesters held a prayer vigil at a Planned Parentnhood health center.

Texas  10/22/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received a card addressed to "My Doctor" from a nonexistent local address. The card included a handwritten message from “a fetus.”

Oklahoma  10/21/09  A threatening e-mail was received by a Planned Parenthood health center that contained anti-choice rhetoric.

Texas  10/17/09  A patient at a Planned Parenthood health center grabbed the signs and pamphlets of a protester and threw them to the ground after the protester ignored the patient’s requests to be left alone. A police officer was on scene and saw the incident. He warned the patient but did not charge her.

Missouri  10/17/09  A large group of protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center arrived in the morning, carried signs and photos, and left in the afternoon.

New York  10/14/09  A large group with graphic signs protested at a Planned Parenthood health center.

Pennsylvania  10/10/09  A young man in a car repeatedly drove by a Planned Parenthood health center blaring Christian rap and R&B music with his windows down. The man has done this before at the same health center.

Nevada  10/10/09  A Planned Parenthood health center had a group of protesters on the corner outside the front door.

New York  10/10/09  A group of protesters entered a Planned Parenthood health center parking lot after the center closed. The protesters prayed in a circle for about 20 minutes, and then each person touched the building.

New York  10/09/09  Two women and five children were praying in front of a Planned Parenthood health center. The children had their coats lying across the sidewalk impeding pedestrian traffic. The protesters also sprinkled "holy water" on the center lawn.

Minnesota  10/08/09  A man stood on the highway median in front of a Planned Parenthood health center making shooting gestures at the building. The man was seen earlier talking to staff and driving by the building several times in a business van. The man left the scene prior to the arrival of police but was later confronted at his home. Police reported that he was apologetic for his behavior and taken aback at having been identified.

Texas  10/07/09  Staff arriving at a Planned Parenthood health center found an anti-choice sign taped to the center doors.

Nevada  10/05/09–10/07/09  A woman was discovered to be drawing crosses on the front doors of a Planned Parenthood health center with a clear, oily substance.

Pennsylvania  10/05/09  A staff member at a Planned Parenthood health center found eight DVDs shoved in the front door of the center. "God’s Word" was handwritten on each DVD.

Colorado  10/03/09  A protester came to a Planned Parenthood health center and threatened staff. His activities have been reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Florida  10/02/09  Members of a local church staged a protest at a Planned Parenthood health center. They carried signs and recited Bible verses.

Pennsylvania  10/02/09  The bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg led a prayer group in front of a Planned Parenthood health center.

South Dakota  10/01/09  The front door and two other panes of exterior glass were broken at a Planned Parenthood health center.
