HotSpots for February 1-28, 2010

HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Virginia  02/26/10  A male protester has been observed outside a Planned Parenthood health center late in the evening, well after patients have left. He has been dressed all in black, with gloves, and a hood pulled over this face.

South Dakota  02/26/10  The partner of a patient from a Planned Parenthood health center threatened to "shoot the legs" of the doctor if he found out that his partner had had an abortion.

California  02/25/10  A man who said he was Catholic left voice messages for two different Planned Parenthood staff members, inquiring about volunteer opportunities to provide "a proper burial" for aborted babies.

Colorado  02/23/10  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center discovered a stack of cards from “Our Lady of Guadalupe — Intercessor of the Unborn” that had been left in the health center waiting room.

Michigan  02/22/10  A Planned Parenthood health center has regularly seen the same group of protesters from a local church outside the center every Monday since November 2009.

Indiana  02/21/10  A Planned Parenthood health center was burglarized.

New Jersey  02/19/10 and 02/27/10  Patients at a Planned Parenthood health center reported being told by protesters across the street not to enter the health center, that they “can be helped.”

Colorado  02/19/10  A pre-recorded, religious, anti-choice rant was phoned in several times to a Planned Parenthood health center.

Illinois  02/18/10  A Planned Parenthood health center received an envelope with a sticker of a fetus and several anti-choice statements. The envelope contained a DVD with graphic footage from an anti-choice group.

Virginia  02/18/10  Patients at a Planned Parenthood health center reported to staff that protesters were cursing and shaking signs at them as they entered the building.

Minnesota  02/18/10 Protesters were harassing patients as they entered and left a Planned Parenthood health center. The health center’s landlord called to let staff know that the protesters had asked if they could use another suite in the building to warm up and make posters. The landlord told them no and said if they continued to harass him, he would notify police.

Florida  02/17/10  Thirty protesters turned up at a Planned Parenthood health center.

Delaware  02/17/10  A man requesting free condoms at a Planned Parenthood health center asked for the name of the doctor who "kills babies." The man was escorted out of the health center.

North Carolina  02/16/10  A Planned Parenthood health center was contacted by a caller who told staff they were "going to hell" and asked how they could sleep at night.

Oregon  02/15/10  An elderly woman visited a Planned Parenthood health center and began talking about not being able to work in a place where "blood might begin dripping from the walls" and needing to use holy water. She was escorted from the property and was later seen with protesters on the sidewalk.

Indiana  02/14/10  Protesters appeared outside the home of a couple who are neighbors of a Planned Parenthood abortion provider.

Oregon  02/14/10  At the opening of a new Planned Parenthood health center, more than 200 protesters were present. More than 500 employees, supporters, and members of the general public were also there. There was a significant police presence and while there were a few verbal exchanges and some minor shoving, none of the incidents resulted in arrests.

Arizona  02/13/10  A protester entered a Planned Parenthood health center and stood by the door telling patients not to have abortions. The center manager told the protester to leave, and the protester ran away.

Texas  02/08/10  A man entered the lobby of a Planned Parenthood health center and began asking patients to rethink their decisions on abortion. Staff asked the man to leave and he did so.

Indiana  02/07/10  A group of men, women, and children protested outside the home of a Planned Parenthood staff member. The group was loud and carried gruesome signs. Police appeared on scene at two different times and the group left without further incident.

North Carolina  02/06/10  A group of protesters outside a Planned Parenthood health center became aggressive, cursing and yelling at patients and staff and impeding cars trying to enter the parking lot.

Oregon  02/05/10  Protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center have begun attaching large signs to city light poles, bus stop signs, etc.

Mississippi  02/03/10  A man wearing a T-shirt with the image of a fetus on it entered a Planned Parenthood health center and asked employees to sign a “personhood amendment" petition. After employees refused, the man said he would pray for them and left the center.

Wisconsin  02/03/10  A series of anti-choice, threatening voice messages were left at a Planned Parenthood health center by the same woman over a period of a few weeks.

Florida  02/01/10  More than 300 protesters lead by a Catholic bishop demonstrated outside a Planned Parenthood health center.

Multiple Sites, February 2010  Several Planned Parenthood health centers have received an anti-choice mailing: an envelope containing an image of angels in an alley and the phrase, "God is watching. You will be held accountable."
