HotSpots for December 1-31, 2009

HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Michigan 12/30/09  Several Planned Parenthood health centers received copies of an anti-choice letter. A Bible verse was included in the letter.

Wisconsin 12/28/09  A large group of protesters arrived outside a Planned Parenthood health center in a bus and several cars. The group got out and prayed on the sidewalk and took some pictures. They left after approximately 15 minutes with no further incident.

Multiple Sites 12/28/09  Several Planned Parenthood health centers in different states received the same anti-choice mailing, a letter containing a picture of angels hovering over a women's clinic and warnings to the receiver that they will be held “accountable” for their actions.

New York 12/28/09  A Planned Parenthood health center employee discovered swastikas traced in the snow on her car, which was parked in the health center parking lot.

Indiana 12/24/09  Protesters arrived outside the home of a Planned Parenthood health center abortion provider on Christmas Eve and stayed for a short time.

Oklahoma 12/23/09  A man parked in front of a Planned Parenthood health center and repeatedly honked his horn while yelling obscenities before driving off.

Iowa 12/22/09  A man and woman went to a Planned Parenthood health center dressed as Santa & Mrs. Claus. The couple claimed they had gifts to leave for staff and patients. Staff took the gifts and found anti-choice materials, receiving blankets, rosaries, and other infant-related items.

Louisiana 12/20/09  Staff arrived at a Planned Parenthood health center to find that the sign in front of the building had been vandalized.

Illinois 12/16/09  A protester approached a car located in a parking lot across the street from a Planned Parenthood health center to hand the occupants some anti-choice literature. The protester claims that a man inside the car flashed a gun at her and she backed away from the vehicle. The man and his female companion eventually got out of the vehicle and entered the health center for an appointment. Police were called and several cars responded to the scene. The man was an off-duty Chicago police officer who said he had only flashed his badge. No charges were filed.

New York 12/16/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received hate mail that contained anti-choice comments and referenced the holidays.

Texas 12/14/09  Three Planned Parenthood health centers received the same anti-choice mail that has been received at several other health centers. The letters contained the same Bible verse.

New York 12/12/09  Two men blocked the entrance to a Planned Parenthood health center and refused to move. Both men were arrested and are facing federal charges related to violation of FACE.

Nevada 12/09/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received an anti-choice postcard that contained a variety of religious comments.

Nevada 12/09/09  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center discovered an anti-choice pamphlet in the bathroom sink.

Montana 12/07/09  The father of a patient called a Planned Parenthood health center, angry that his daughter had been provided with birth control. The man verbally threatened staff with consequences if they gave his daughter birth control again. The man was subsequently told by police not to contact any Planned Parenthood health center staff, and staff members were instructed to call police if the man does call again.

Washington 12/02/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received four harassing phone calls within one hour. All of the calls referenced abortion.

Arizona 12/01/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received the same anti-choice letter that had been received at several other health centers. The letter contains quotes from the same Bible verse.
