HotSpots for August 1–31, 2009

HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Kentucky  08/31/09  An employee arrived at a Planned Parenthood health center and found a clipping from the local newspaper taped to the door titled "Abortion Foe Might Claim Doctor's Slaying Justifiable.”

California  08/31/09  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center discovered a downstairs window had been broken by an object thrown from the parking lot. Glass was scattered inside and out and the object used remained on the window ledge.

Indiana  08/30/09  Protesters positioned themselves near the home of a physician. They indicated that they planned to be present from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. that day.

Nebraska  08/29/09  Members of  the anti-choice extremist group Operation Rescue, who had been active in Wichita at the late Dr. Tiller’s clinic traveled to Nebraska to protest at the clinic of Dr. LeRoy Carhart.

Nebraska  08/28/09  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center found debris from a Molotov cocktail-type of device in the parking lot. The device had been ignited but did not damage the building.

Wisconsin  08/27/09  A Planned Parenthood health center received a call from a man who refused to identify himself. The man stated, “I was hoping you would pray with me and stop performing abortions."

Wisconsin  08/26/09  A Planned Parenthood health center had an increased number of protesters who verbally harassed patients and threw anti-abortion literature into open windows.

Pennsylvania  08/26/09  A federal court rejected the claims of protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center, who claimed their free speech rights were compromised when police didn’t allow them to protest from the health center’s handicapped access ramp. Protesters at this location are allowed to stand on the sidewalk immediately in front of the ramp.

Washington  08/26/09  Authorities arrested a man and charged him with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce and violation of the FACE Act for a threatening phone call he made to an abortion clinic in Boulder, Colorado, in June of this year.

Delaware  08/22/09  Two people attempting to enter a Planned Parenthood health center were accosted by a protester who blocked their progress. Law enforcement was called, a complaint was filed, and the protester was arrested.

Florida  08/21/09  Six to eight men and women stood near a Planned Parenthood health center holding anti-abortion signs. Some clients complained that protesters followed them to the entrance and yelled at them.

Pennsylvania  08/15/09  During a large protest at a Planned Parenthood health center, a protester grabbed a Planned Parenthood volunteer by the arm but inflicted no injury. A second volunteer was tripped by the protester and fell to the ground, possibly causing injury to his back.

New York  08/13/09  Protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center placed an anti-choice sign in a tree outside the building. The tree is on city property; it was not legal for the protesters to do that; and the sign had to be removed from the tree.

New York  08/13/09  An ambulance arrived at a Planned Parenthood health center to assist a patient. A protester had a camera and waited to take pictures of the client being taken out of the building and into the ambulance. Planned Parenthood volunteers blocked his view.

New Jersey  08/06/09 & 08/13/09  A group of protesters at a Planned Parenthood site had a sign with a photo of a fetus and gave out anti-choice literature. One of the protestors approached staff members and told them that the Bible says "abortion is wrong."

Iowa  08/06/09  A window at a Planned Parenthood health center was found damaged and appeared to be an entry point. Staff returning to work noticed that $50 was missing from the cash drawer.

Ohio  08/05/09  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center found three, 8 x 12 inch crosses drawn with a clear oily substance on the building doors. Staff was able to remove them with soap and water.

Colorado  08/04/09  Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center found that the building had been vandalized with pink paint balls.

Wisconsin  08/03/09, 08/04/09 & 08/06/09  Four Planned Parenthood health centers received identical anti-choice letters from an unknown person.

Indiana  08/01/09  A patient and her boyfriend were in the parking lot of a Planned Parenthood health center when a protester walked toward the car to give them anti-choice materials. The boyfriend pulled a gun and the protester retreated. Health center staff instructed the boyfriend to leave the premises and not return. The boyfriend complied.

Multiple Locations 08/09  Several Planned Parenthood health centers received the same anti-choice letter directed “To whom it may concern,” offering anti-choice views on abortion.
