HotSpots (Security Briefings): August 2006

Idaho 08/27/06 While distributing Planned Parenthood literature at a booth at a county fair, one staff member and two volunteers were photographed by an unidentified man in a red shirt who fled the area before security personnel could be summoned.

Oregon 08/22/06 A Planned Parenthood health center was burglarized.

Texas 08/17/06 Protesters at a Planned Parenthood health center were handing out bags of anti-choice/anti-Planned Parenthood literature while trying to deter patients from entering the parking lot.

California 08/16/06 A Planned Parenthood health center was burglarized over the weekend. An air conditioning unit was stolen.

South Dakota 08/12/06 150-200 protesters held an uneventful protest outside a Planned Parenthood health center. Police monitored the event.

Kentucky 8/10/06 PPFA received a patient complaint from a woman who claimed that Planned Parenthood staff during her health center visit had refused to provide her with birth control, had urged that she abstain from sex until marriage, and told her that her sexual behavior was endangering the fate of her eternal soul. After investigation it was learned that she had mistakenly entered a so-called "Crisis Pregnancy Center" (CPC) that is located in close proximity to a Planned Parenthood health center. Staff at the CPC had never admitted to her that they were not Planned Parenthood. The patient was seen at an actual Planned Parenthood location and was very satisfied with the visit and the Planned Parenthood staff she met there.

South Dakota 08/10/06 A series of threatening calls directed at specific staff members from a man claiming to be the partner of a former patient has led to police taking action to identify the caller. Legal action is planned.

Texas 08/09/06 Planned Parenthood staff discovered the ashtray at a health center had been ripped from the exterior wall, an exterior light bulb was broken, and a chair smashed.

Pennsylvania 08/04/06 The front door glass window of a Planned Parenthood health center was broken after staff had left for the day.

Florida 08/01/06 A small group of protesters have gathered daily at the site of a future Planned Parenthood affiliate headquarters ever since learning of the new construction.

New York 07/16/06 20-30 protesters gathered outside the site of a Planned Parenthood affiliate's birthday gala. Local police monitored the situation, which remained peaceful.

Florida 07/11/06 Vandals have stolen both the "Exit" and "Enter" signs at a Planned Parenthood health center.
