HotSpots (Security Briefings): May 2006
HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates, national offices, and other reproductive health care providers produced monthly by The Security Group, Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Iowa 05/16/06 Police arrested a man who assaulted an employee and then broke into a clinic that is a National Abortion Federation member abortion provider.
New York 05/11/06 Two protesters from a local fundamentalist congregation blocked the sidewalk at a Planned Parenthood health center and one physically ran into an employee.
Pennsylvania 05/03/06 Protesters blocked the doorway to a Planned Parenthood health center and attempted to speak to patients, making them uncomfortable. Staff assurance and police presence eased their anxiety.
Montana 05/02/06 A large rock was thrown at the window of a Planned Parenthood health center.
Washington, DC 05/01/06 The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a new appeal in the celebrated "Nuremberg Files" cases, involving anti-abortion groups' aggressive publicity campaign against doctors who perform abortions. The denial was the second in the case by the court in the past three years. As a result, two groups, the American Coalition for Life Activists and Advocates for Life Ministries, plus 11 individuals, remain liable for $4.7 million in punitive damages, plus $11 million in treble damages under the RICO law, and $526,000 in compensatory damages to two abortion clinics in Oregon and two doctors who perform abortions. The case was American Coalition, et al., v Planned Parenthood, et al.
