HotSptots (Security Briefings): October, 2006



HotSpots is a summary of incidents of harassment and violence directed at Planned Parenthood affiliates and other reproductive health care providers, produced monthly by The Security Group, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc.

Iowa  11/01/06 - An anti-choice extremist was arrested in front of a Planned Parenthood health center for harassment and disorderly conduct. 

Arizona  10/29/06 - Two incidents of harassment were reported by activists participating in a pro-choice event.  In the first, a passerby threw a 20-ounce plastic bottle filled with sour milk at one of the activists and struck her in the face.  Later, while the group was packing up their signs, a car drove by and the person in the passenger seat, wearing a white hockey mask was stabbing a doll with a knife.  The driver was shouting anti-choice slogans. 

Maryland  10/27/06 - Robert Weiler, Jr., arrested in June after law enforcement found a bomb he had built, pled guilty to being a felon in possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of an explosive/destructive device and violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic entrances Act (FACE).  Weiler had stated that he intended to use the device to blow up an abortion clinic.  Sentencing is scheduled for December 18.

Iowa  10/27/06 - David McEnemy, the man who allegedly drove his car into the lobby of a family planning clinic and then set fire to the car in September 2006, pled not guilty to arson charges. .

Washington  10/24/06 - Anti-choice protesters picketed a Planned Parenthood health center, holding graphic signs, praying, and blocking traffic.  Police were called and they ticketed the protesters for blocking the driveway to the health center. 

New Mexico  10/19/06 - A staff member walking across the parking lot between two Planned Parenthood facilities was struck in the head by a rock thrown from behind a wall and was briefly knocked unconscious,. 

Ohio  10/17/06 - A Planned Parenthood health center received three harassing voice mails. 

Illinois  10/11/06 - A Planned Parenthood client reported receiving an anti-choice e-mail.

New York  10/06/06 - James Kopp’s last appeal in his conviction on state charges for the murder of Dr. Barnett Slepian was denied.  Kopp is serving a term of 25 years to life.  Kopp’s trial on Federal charges is scheduled to begin 01/03/07.

Missouri  10/03/06 - Staff at a Planned Parenthood health center received a threatening phone call. 

Minnesota  10/02/06 - The sign located on the boulevard in front of a Planned Parenthood health center was vandalized.  No other signs in the vicinity were damaged.  Police were notified.

Texas  09/16/06 - A man protested at a Planned Parenthood health center with a woman and three children.  They passed out pamphlets and yelled at patients in cars.  The man trespassed on Planned Parenthood property and police were called.
