2006 Midterm Election Results

Read on for a roundup of 2006 midterm elections results. These outcomes could have a significant impact on women’s access to reproductive health care.

State Ballot Initiatives

In a great victory for women’s health, voters yesterday rejected South Dakota’s total abortion ban and defeated ballot initiatives in California and Oregon that would have endangered the health and safety of teenagers.  Planned Parenthood mobilized activists and supporters in local communities throughout the country to help in the effort to achieve these pro-choice victories.

Key Congressional Races

Pro-choice candidates won in a number of important races, including

• Sherrod Brown (OH Sen, D)
• Robert Menendez (NJ Sen, D)
• Claire McCaskill (MO Sen, D)
• Ed Perlmutter (CO-7, D)
• Bruce Braley (IA-1, D)

Party Control of Congress

As a result of the 2006 midterm elections, the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate are now both controlled by the Democratic Party.
