Planned Parenthood Launches Relief Efforts in Kenya
Planned Parenthood Federation of America supports and collaborates with two local partner organizations in Kenya — Carolina for Kibera and K-MET — which are courageously reaching out to those most affected by the recent post-election violence. As our staff and partners themselves struggle to regain a sense of normalcy, they are also working to address the needs of displaced people and survivors of sexual violence.
Within the past few months, Planned Parenthood partners have been able to
- provide food and shelter to nearly 800 displaced families
- distribute hundreds of condoms and birth control pills in internally displaced peoples camps
- provide emergency contraception and post-rape care
- counsel countless trauma and abuse survivors
- refer survivors of rape and sexual violence to Nairobi Women’s Hospital
- organize free medical clinics in Kibera
- train 25 community leaders in conflict mediation
- provide legal redress for survivors of violence and abuse
- develop peace messages to promote in radio campaigns
We are proud of our Kenyan staff and partners and their relief efforts, but supplies are dwindling fast.
