Serving Emerging Communities

In the past few weeks, hundreds of thousands of people have rallied in support of rights for the millions of immigrants, documented and undocumented, who play a vital role in our economy, culture, and communities. Planned Parenthood is working to prevent the passage of legislation that would criminalize the provision of social services and health care to undocumented immigrants.

Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country also offer programs for emerging communities. Below is a partial list of Planned Parenthood health centers that are doing tremendous work with immigrant populations.

Planned Parenthood of Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle (PPATP) — One day a week PPATP operates a health center in Cactus, TX, which has more undocumented than documented citizens and is predominantly an immigrant community. The health center is staffed by a nurse practitioner and a patient care assistant who speak Spanish.

Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma (PPAEO) — PPAEO provides a full range of services to all immigrant and undocumented individuals. Translators are on hand in all Tulsa health centers, as well as in a mobile health center. Bilingual outreach workers and educators are also on staff.

Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina (PPCNC) — North Carolina has one of the fastest growing Latino populations in the country. PPCNC has created programs and services that provide culturally appropriate services to Latino communities, including a Spanish-language public awareness campaign and a training program for Latino community members to be peer educators.

Planned Parenthood of Central Washington (PPCW) — PPCW serves many immigrants through a non-citizen family planning grant that extends Washington's Medicaid waiver to immigrants. The program is called "Cuidase," which means "Take care of yourself."

Planned Parenthood Golden Gate (CA) (PPGG) — PPGG provides culturally relevant outreach to thousands of Spanish-speaking immigrants in the Bay Area. PPGG works with migrant farm workers, day laborers, youth and parents, and political refugees. The PPGG website is also available in Spanish.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa (PPGI) — PPGI provides clinical services in the inner city, which serves undocumented, non-English-speaking, Latino immigrants. PPGI also collaborates with partners in the community to conduct evening clinics for migrant farm workers.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Miami, Palm Beach, and Treasure Coast (PPGMPBTC) — PPGMBTC has developed workshops in Spanish and Creole for rural farm workers, empowering parents to educate and inform other parents and community members about teen sexuality and reproductive health.

Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri (PPKM) — PPKM retains volunteer interpreters and works with community organizations to ensure access to health services for Latino communities.

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) — PPLM addresses the emergency contraception needs of the Brazilian community living in central Massachusetts.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) — The Farmworker Education and Services Program is a collaboration among PPMM staff, local law enforcement officials, local government, and people representing agribusiness to bring culturally competent reproductive health care to migrant workers.

Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota (PPMNS) — PPMNS offers a variety of programs for Latinos, recent immigrants, West Africans, and Latino youth.

Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs (IA) (PPNCB) — PPNCB serves Latina immigrant women. PPNCBI also works with Sudanese, Iraqi, Bosnian, and Serbo-Croation communities, former Soviet Union immigrants, and other Arabic-speaking and Farsi-speaking communities.

Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) — The Bronx Immigrant Outreach Project serves the sexual and reproductive health care needs of Latino and African immigrant populations in the Bronx.

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) — PPNNE has increased services to clients with limited English proficiency, including Latino, Vietnamese, Somali, and Sudanese women.

Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region (NY) (PPRSR) — A PPRSR outreach program resulted in a 10 to 20 percent increase in the number of Latino participants in PPRSR education programming.

Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties (PPSDRC) — Because of its location on the Mexican border, PPSDRC offers a wide range of services for the Latino community.

Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona (PPSA) — PPSA collaborates with school districts to provide sexuality education to middle-school boys and girls of Mexican descent.

Planned Parenthood of Southern New Jersey (PPSNJ) — PPSNJ addresses the low rates of early detection breast and cervical cancer screenings among women of Asian descent, particularly Vietnamese women.

Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region (PPSWO) — The PPSWO Latino Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care Access Program includes a 24-hour Spanish-language information line.

Planned Parenthood Trust of San Antonio and South Central Texas (PPSCTX) — With a Latino majority in San Antonio, PPSCTX designs all of its programs with cultural competency in mind. All nine of its health centers see immigrant clients, and all of its community education work addresses the immigrant population.
