Cecile Richards on gather.com

PPFA President Cecile Richards is currently featured in an interview on the social networking website gather.com.  The discussion is tied to Back-Up Your Birth Control Day, which falls on March 20 and is dedicated to increasing awareness of emergency contraception (EC) — the backup method of birth control that can prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

Also known as the "morning-after pill," EC can prevent an unintended pregnancy when started up to 120 hours — five days — after unprotected intercourse. The sooner it’s started, the better — it reduces the risk of pregnancy by 75-89 percent when started within 72 hours.

Planned Parenthood is currently focusing on efforts to expand access to EC in pharmacies.  Many pharmacies throughout the country have policies that allow pharmacists to refuse to provide EC because of their personal biases.
