Roe v. Wade
On Roberts and Alito
“After John Roberts was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court, I went to Venice Beach, CA, and handed out Planned Parenthood’s ‘Stand Up for ChoiceSM’ stickers. I also went with a Planned Parenthood client to a rally, standing side by side on a street corner in the San Fernando Valley with our signs, bringing awareness of the issues to folks who drove by.
"Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito could change the course of history, impacting an entire generation of young adults in a way that takes away rights and changes our society forever. You bet I was demonstrating, and if I have to, I will also be demonstrating against the overturning of Roe v. Wade — many women do not have the economic means to travel state to state for abortion services.” — Alan Kaye, pro-choice and cancer-prevention activist, Woodland Hills, CA
Before Roe
“Back in the days when I was growing up, we had very little information regarding our sex lives or I just didn’t know where to get it — except for what we read in the True Love story books. We grew up thinking that everything was very romantic. And that when you find a true love, you get married, have babies, and life is wonderful. Unfortunately not true for me or some of my friends. I saw a lot of ugly things they went through. I was one of the younger girls in my group and I witnessed some very desperate situations. I saw one friend help the other not even knowing how dangerous it really was.
"When abortion became legal I was relieved, knowing that it had to be safer and better then what I had seen. I’ve worked in the PPFA International Division for many years and today you still find women and men around the world who do not know about their own sexuality. There are people today in 2006 who do not know that help is available to them. Planned Parenthood is a great organization. Just ask any woman today who has been able to space her children and take control of her life.” — Cindy Cales, executive associate, PPFA International Division
