Writing a letter to the editor of your local daily newspaper, college weekly or national magazine is a great way to get your message out about reproductive and sexual health, choice, the list goes on and on.
What Should I Do?
- Do note the letter or article to which your letter refers if it is a response.
- Do stick to the recommended word counts. Letters should generally not be longer than about 150-200 words.
- Do use personal details or stories if possible.
- Do contact the public policy department at PPINW for help if you need it. We have fact sheets, statistics and staff to assist you or proofread.
- Do call the paper after you send it. Continue calling until the Editor confirms s/he has received it.
- Do remember that many letters won't be published. Be persistent and don't get discouraged.
- Do cut the letter out of the paper once it is published and send a copy to your local legislators. They should know what their constituents are thinking!
- Do contact the public policy group at PPINW to let us know you sent a letter — even if it doesn’t get published. We'll want to thank you! Call 509-241-4156 or e-mail ppinwadvocate@ppinw.org.
