Our History

Below are the highlights of how a volunteer-run family planning counseling association in Spokane became Planned Parenthood of the Inland Northwest, which now serves the eight counties of eastern Washington and the nine counties of northern Idaho.

  • 1967 —  A dedicated group of pioneering volunteers established Spokane Family Planning Association and begin providing counseling services.
  • 1973 —  Spokane Family Planning Association began providing clinical family planning with a volunteer doctor and midwife. In the same year, the organization became part of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) under the name Planned Parenthood of Spokane.
  • 1981 — PP of Spokane moved its patient services operations from a donated space in a downtown office building and opened a freestanding clinic in north Spokane.
  • 1985 — The first Planned Parenthood clinic in the Spokane Valley opened in medical office complex.
  • 1986 — PP of Spokane assumed operation of a family planning clinic in Pullman, WA and became Planned Parenthood of Spokane and Whitman Counties.
  • 1990 — In response to community needs, affiliate began providing first trimester abortion services in Spokane.
  • 1991 — Planned Parenthood of Spokane and Whitman Counties hosted the annual PPFA Western Region conference.
  • 1993 — Current Spokane health center location on Indiana Avenue is purchased and remodeled. The affiliate consolidated administrative, education, surgical and family planning services under one roof. All other clinic locations were closed, with the exception of Spokane Valley and Pullman.
  • 1994 — Planned Parenthood of Spokane and Whitman Counties nurses are placed in Community Service Office locations in Colfax, Southwest, and East Spokane as part of an agreement with WA State Department of Social and Health Services.
  • 1995 — The affiliate applied for and was granted an expanded service region to include all eight counties of eastern Washington.
  • 1996 — The Spokane Valley clinic was bombed as a diversionary tactic for a bank robbery. The clinic was closed at the time and there were no injuries, but the building had extensive damage.
  • 1999 — To more accurately reflect the geographic area served, the affiliate name was changed to Planned Parenthood of the Inland Northwest.
  • 2000 — PPFA grants an expanded service region request to include the nine counties of northern Idaho.
