Why is accurate sexual health information important?
- Each day in the U.S., more than 2,000 teen girls get pregnant – that’s 750,000 girls a year, or 3 in 10 by age 20.
- The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1.1 million people are living with HIV/AIDS (2006), and an estimated 21%---232,344---are unaware of their status. And HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts Blacks and Latinas.
- HIV/AIDS is the #4 killer of US Latinas age 35-44.
- African American men and women have an estimated incidence rate 7 times as high as among whites. And although Blacks are 13% of the population, they are nearly 50% of newly reported AIDS cases.
