Teen dating is a critical component in adolescent development. These relationships help teens gain the experience they need for future relationships. However, these relationships are not always the healthy experiences we imagine them to be.
Relationships are complex; often it is difficult for us to recognize the boundaries between healthy, unhealthy, or abusive behaviors, and teen relationships are no exception. Adolescents often receive conflicting messages that make it difficult for them to navigate healthy companionship, intimacy, and boundaries within their relationships.
Adolescents are more likely than adults to hide the abuse, become isolated and not seek the help they need. This is often compounded by a lack of information about existing resources, dating rights and the rights to access services on their own.
During this informative four-hour session we will:
- provide an overview of the dynamics and prevalence of teen dating violence
- explore different approaches for identifying teen dating violence
- discuss how to provide support for teens in abusive relations
- review ways to empower youth to develop skills for creating and maintaining healthy relationships
- focus on teen confidentiality, rights & reporting requirements
