Rockland Benefit
June 6, 2013
More than 150 supporters helped Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic (PPHP) raise $28,000 for reproductive and sexual health care at the Rockland Benefit at Nyack Beach State Park on June 6. The Benefit, which celebrated PPHP’s 80th anniversary, included Mediterranean wines, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and raffle. Held at the park’s Historic Bath House, the fundraiser honored Rockland residents Dr. Sonya and Milton Shapiro and Susan Hito-Shapiro.
Rockland residents Carol Fleischmann, Karen Shovers Goldsmith, Denise Lipson, and Johanna Alter Wilson co-chaired the event. Hors d’oeuvres were provided by Nyack Gourmet. Committee member Adam Lipson led a service auction that raised $5,900 to continue Teen Information and Peer Services (TIPS), a teen leadership program that trains local high school students as peer educators.
Guests included Congresswoman Nita Lowey -- who gave a brief political update and spoke passionately about the need to support women’s health care -- and more than a dozen state and municipal officials.

Securing the Promise of Roe

PPHP Board President Jill Scheuer, keynote speaker Jessica Arons, New York State Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, and PPHP President/CEO Reina Schiffrin.
Reproductive health and rights advocate Jessica Arons gave Planned Parenthood supporters on Long Island and in Westchester County a primer on abortion case law as the keynote speaker for Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic and Planned Parenthood of Nassau County’s Roe v. Wade anniversary celebrations.
Arons, director of the Women’s Health and Rights Program at the Center for American Progress, gave her talk, "Securing the Promise of Roe," on January 23 in Cold Spring Harbor and on January 24 in White Plains. The events were attended by many state representatives, county legislators, and board members.
Arons spoke about other significant Supreme Court cases that have resulted in abortion restrictions over the years (i.e. Harris v. McCray, Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and Maher v. Doe) and noted the many obstacles that the federal and state governments put in the way of women, from funding restrictions to mandatory ultrasounds.
