Cecile Richards has been the President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. since February 2006 and also serves as President of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Ms. Richards is a leader in national progressive politics with more than 20 years of experience in support of reproductive freedom and social justice. Ms. Richards founded and served as President of America Votes, a coalition of more than 30 national organizations, including the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. She served as Deputy Chief of staff for Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, where she played a key role in the Congress member's election as the first woman Democratic leader of the House of Representatives. She has a long history of work in the reproductive rights community. She created and directed a national pro-choice ID project for the Turner Foundation, where she worked closely with PPFA affiliates and the national staff. She formed and served as president of Pro-Choice Vote, the largest 527 political committee in the 2000 election cycle. She serves as a Trustee of Ford Foundation. She is a regular speaker at national and state organizations' conferences. Ms. Richards formed the Texas Freedom Network (TFN) to combat the anti-choice, radical policy agenda of the extreme right in Texas. Ms. Richards began her career organizing low-wage garment workers on the Rio Grande border. Her years as a union organizer included running the nationally recognized "Justice for Janitors" campaign in Los Angeles, CA, a successful effort to increase access to health care and better wages for immigrant janitors.

The Facts on African-American Women and Health Care
African Americans face numerous obstacles to obtaining sexual and reproductive health services. They experience higher rates of reproductive cancers, unintended pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections. Because they are more likely to be uninsured or underinsured, they are forced to delay care and are diagnosed later than others with the same health problems, ultimately resulting in higher death rates. Planned Parenthood is committed to reducing racial disparities in reproductive health care, including the high rates of cancers, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy among African Americans, and will continue to work tirelessly for a health care system that provides affordable, high-quality care and treats all people with dignity. Call 800-230-PLAN (7526) to make an appointment.
Here are the facts:
- African-American women with cervical cancer are twice as likely to lose their lives to this disease as are white women.
- African Americans, while representing 14 percent of the U.S. population, account for 69 percent of gonorrhea cases and about half of all cases of chlamydia, HIV/AIDS, and syphilis.
- In 2010, 20.5 percent of African Americans were uninsured, as compared to 11.7 percent of whites.
- African-American women have more than double the unintended pregnancy rate of white women. As a result, African-American women also have higher rates of abortion.
Here's how we work with the African American community:
- One in five women in the U.S. has visited a Planned Parenthood health center at some point in her life.
- Planned Parenthood health centers provide family planning services and contraception that help prevent an estimated 584,000 unintended pregnancies and 277,000 abortions every year.
- In 2010, 14 percent of Planned Parenthood patients were African Americans — more than 400,000 people.
- Between 2001 and 2010, the number of African-American patients increased by 36 percent, with a 27 percent increase in African-American male clients.
- Every year, Planned Parenthood affiliates provide family planning counseling and contraception to 2.2 million patients, including 280,000 African-American women in 2010.
