Here are some quick facts to get you thinking:
· One in four women, between the ages of 14 and 19, has a sexually transmitted infection.[1]
· More than half of all people will have an STI at some point in their live.[2]
· “Adolescents and youth in their 20s are much more likely than older men and women to contract chlamydia and gonorrhea.”[3]
· Anyone who has had unprotected sex (not used a male condom, female condom or dental dam) should talk to their clinician about getting tested.
· Many tests are as easy as a urine or blood test. Some HIV tests can even be done by swabbing the inside of your mouth.
· “In most cases, infection does not have a major, lasting impact on an individual’s health if she or he seeks proper treatment.”[4]
· To reduce your chances of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), follow the A-B-Cs. Abstain from sexual intercourse. Be faithful to your partner or limit the number of sexual partners you have if you’re not in a committed relationship. Use condoms consistently and correctly every time.[5]
