Ask Dr. Cullins: STIs/STDs

Q:  Is it true that condoms cause HPV infections that lead to cancer?

A:  Absolutely not. This is one of the myths that comes from anti-family planning misinformation campaigns. Latex condoms or female condoms are the best way for sex partners to reduce the risk of infection during intercourse, including the kinds of HPVs (human papilloma viruses) that cause cancers of the cervix and penis.

Condoms not only reduce the risk of infection, they are also helpful in reducing the effects of existing HPV infections. Recent studies from the Netherlands show that condom use leads to a faster disappearance of changes caused by HPV in the skin of the penis or in the cervix.
