Health Center Services and Information

Walk-in Services

Walk-in services: Blood pressure checks and Depo injections for current patients are available on a walk in basis on Mondays and Wednesdays (except the third Wednesday of each month) from 9am-7:30pm, and Fridays from 9am-4pm.

All other services require an appointment.

If you need emergency contraception (morning after pill), you can walk in any time the health center is open.

Appointment Information

Birth control refill pick ups are available up to one half hour before closing.

At this health center you can come in for appointments that do not require a medical exam.

Specially trained staff are available for people with developmental disabilities.

Specially trained staff and medical equipment are available for people with physical disabilities.

We do not provide childcare services. We request that you please make childcare arrangements.

Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to wait unsupervised in the waiting area.

Only infants and toddlers in a car seat or stroller are allowed into the exam room. We request that you please make arrangements for childcare for any other children.

Abortion Services

Hempstead Center offers the following services:

Here’s what you need to know about abortion services at this health center:

Abortion Pill (Medication Abortion)

Abortion pill (medication abortion) is offered up to 9.00 weeks after the start of your last menstrual period.

Abortion pill (medication abortion) services are available by appointment only.

Plan to be at the health center for 1 hour(s) for your entire abortion pill visit (medication abortion).

During the abortion pill (medication abortion) visit, you must agree — before you start — that you will have an in-clinic abortion if the abortion pill does not work.

After your abortion pill visit, you will need access to a telephone, transportation, and backup medical care available to you once you are home.

In-Clinic Abortion

In-clinic abortion is offered up to 12.0 weeks after the start of your last menstrual period.

In-clinic abortions are available by appointment only.

Plan to be at the health center for 3 hours for your entire visit for an in-clinic abortion.

If you desire medication to help make your in-clinic abortion more comfortable, you must have a responsible companion with you to help you get home safely.

If you have asthma, bring an inhaler if you have one.

Other Abortion Services Information

Please do not bring children with you to the health center.

During your visit, you may be given the following:

  • an ultrasound
  • medications to make the abortion more comfortable
  • medication if you are Rh negative
  • antibiotics or other medications
  • birth control information
  • a birth control method

At times there may be protesters outside of the health center. We suggest you avoid interaction with them. This health center offers escorts to walk you inside to your appointment.

Women requesting an abortion must have a medical visit at Planned Parenthood at least 48 hours prior, during which options are reviewed, a history is obtained, an exam is performed and lab work is collected.

Some of the birth control pills that we offer are Ortho Tri Lo, Lutera (generic equivalent for Alesse), Microgestin Fe 1.5/30 (generic equivalent for Loestrin Fe 1.5/30), Ortho Tricyclen, Ortho Cyclen, Cyclessa

If you qualify, you may be able to receive certain birth control services without a pelvic exam.

If required, you may have to schedule a Pap test or a breast exam before getting a hormonal birth control method.

In order to obtain an IUD, we may first require an exam and a Pap test.

Proper Attire™, Planned Parenthood’s exclusive line of condoms, is available at this health center.

Women and men seeking birth control (pills, patches, rings, condoms, etc.) may be eligible for free services. Ask about our Free Birth Control when you call for an appointment.

Here’s what you need to know about getting emergency contraception (morning after pill) at this health center:

Emergency contraception is available over the counter for women and men 17 and older. If you can’t make it in to a Planned Parenthood health center, you may be able to get emergency contraception at a nearby pharmacy.

Women under age 17 can get prescription emergency contraception following a visit with a Planned Parenthood health care provider.

Plan B (emergency contraception) is about half the price of what a pharmacy charges.

Hempstead Center offers the following services:

  • HIV testing

  • HIV referrals
  • Planned Parenthood of Nassau County offers rapid HIV testing - with results available in approximately 20 minutes. The test can be performed using an oral specimen or a blood specimen.

HIV testing services are available at this location:

    • Mondays: 9:00am - 8:00pm
    • Tuesdays: 9:00am - 8:00pm
    • Wednesdays: 9:00am - 8:00pm

Rapid HIV testing can be done by swabbing the inside of your mouth or with a blood sample taken from a finger stick. The results are available in 20-40 minutes.

HIV treatment referral services are available.

Counseling and confidential (private) testing for HIV are provided by trained staff who are sensitive to your needs and concerns.

Results must be given in person.

HPV & Hepatitis Vaccines

Hempstead Center offers the following vaccine services:

Here’s what you need to know about vaccine services at this health center:

Women ages 19 - 26 who have no health insurance and meet financial criteria may qualify for the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program to receive the HPV vaccine (Gardasil) at no charge.

Some vaccines are given in a series over the course of several months, which would require you to return to the health center to get the full benefit.

PPNC provides Gardasil for women 19 to 26. If you are uninsured, you may be eligible for Free Gardasil; ask us about Free Gardasil when you call for an appointment.

Hempstead Center offers the following men's health services:

  • checkups when you have a reproductive/sexual health problem
  • testicular and prostate cancer screening
  • urinary tract infections — testing and treatment
  • STD testing is available through a urine sample. Do not urinate for one hour prior to appointment time.

Here’s what you need to know about getting pregnancy testing and services at this health center:

Our pregnancy tests are urine tests. We will only draw blood for a pregnancy test if it’s medically needed.

We have licensed counselors on staff and provide extensive and personalized options counseling services.

If you choose to continue a pregnancy, we will provide you with a list of resources to help you obtain prenatal care.

If you choose to continue a pregnancy and are considering adoption, we will provide you with a list of agencies that can help you.

If you learn you are pregnant and decide to terminate the pregnancy, we will provide you with abortion services or refer you to an abortion provider.

We recommend a postpartum exam within 6 weeks of your delivery.

If you are pregnant and wish to continue your pregnancy, our Hempstead Health Center provides prenatal care. If you are uninsured and Medicaid eligible, and would like to come to us for your care, then speak with a staff person.

  • STD testing, diagnosis and treatment, including:
    • bacterial vaginosis (BV)
    • chlamydia
    • genital warts
    • gonorrhea
    • herpes
    • HIV (testing and diagnosis only)
    • syphilis
    • trichomoniasis (trich)

  • STD prevention, including:

Here’s what you need to know about STD testing and treatment at this health center:

We can test for gonorrhea and chlamydia using a urine sample. If this test shows an infection, then we will provide you with treatment and explain how your partner(s) can be treated.

For testing involving urine samples, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, do not urinate or engage in sexual intercourse for one hour before testing.

Many STD tests require a genital exam.

Here’s what you need to know in preparation for a women's health visit at this health center:

Do not douche, have sex, or put anything in your vagina 48 hours before your pelvic exam. It is best if you are not having your menstrual period for some types of visits. Contact us if you have questions.

Checkups for gynecological concerns may require a pelvic exam.

For the testing and treatment of urinary tract infections, we will need to collect a urine sample at the time of your visit.

For the testing and treatment of vaginal infections, a pelvic exam may be required.

We offer education and treatment for menopause and midlife issues, including non-hormonal treatment(s).

Hormone replacement therapy requires a routine checkup or records of your current exam.

Referrals for mammograms require a breast exam within the last 6 month(s).

A Pap test is sometimes needed during a routine checkup.

Cervical cancer screening requires a pelvic exam and Pap test.
