Professional Training

The Education department at Planned Parenthood provides professional training and educational workshops giving participants the skills, expertise and comfort necessary to better address sexuality-related issues in their work with students, clients, and patients. Currently, our professional training programs are only available in Houston.

We are approved as a Continuing Education Units (CEU) provider.

Our staff can design and implement sexuality programs and professional staff trainings upon request for your community agency, church,  business (need a Brown Bag lunch program speaker?) or school. For more information about this service, email us at education@ppgulfcoast.org

Planned Parenthood has or continues to provide professional training for several community organizations: Harris County Juvenile Probation, Children's Protective Services, DePelchin Children's Center, Texas Education Agency Service Centers, Texas Department of Human Services, City of Houston, Harris County, psychiatric hospitals, religious institutions, public and private schools, community groups, Rotary Clubs, and child care centers.

HOUSTON: Sex Education for Professionals Fall Series

The Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast Training Center announces the Sex Education for Professionals Fall Series. Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast provides CEUs for nurses and counselors while increasing their skills, knowledge and comfort to address sexuality related issues in work with students, clients and patients.

SEX EDUCATION FOR HEALTH EDUCATORS
Upping Your Sex Ed Game
Tuesday September 24th

5 CEUs for Social Workers and Licensed Professional Counselors working in outreach education
Instructor: Meryl Cohen, MEd, LCSW
Cost - $55
This workshop will focus on increasing skills for providers who are implementing sexuality education programs for youth. We will cover adolescent sexual health information and sexuality issues that the Evidence Based Curricula training did not cover. At the end of the training participants will be able to: create an "askable" and approachable environment for the youth in relation to sexuality; better understand their own values and distinguish them from their professional role; and demonstrate techniques to use in conversation and answering questions about sexuality.

Ethics, Values and Sexuality

Participants will look at how their own sexual learning may impact their work with clients and discover how to respond with empathy and support to a broad range of sexual issues and behaviors. We will address the differences between personal and professional values while discussing variations of sexual behavior, including differences in sexual desire and paraphilias. We will explore such questions as: "What is Typical Sexual Expression?" "How can we keep eroticism alive in long term relationships?"

Challenges to Sexual Functioning

Clients face challenges to sexual functioning throughout the lifespan. Participants will address how illness, disability and aging affect sexual functioning and relationships and how to help clients deal with these challenges. We will explore the history and present thinking in the sex therapy world reviewing Masters and Johnson, Helen Singer Kaplan, Rosemary Basson, David Schnarch and Feminist Models. There will be an opportunity to hear real client challenges and address treatment options.

The art of including sexuality into health care practice comes from awareness of one's beliefs and values and comfort in talking about sexuality. The health care provider will find that most patients will be pleased that he/she has taken the time to broach this important concern with them. In this workshop, we will look at how our own sexual learning may impact our work with patients and discover how to respond with empathy and support to a broad range of sexual issues and behaviors. This workshop provides an overview of the relationship of sexuality to aging, illness and quality of life.

STD Evaluation and Management for Nurses and Health Care Providers

Instructor : Laura Thomas, RN WHNP-BC
Cost - $40
This course will review the 2010 CDC recommendations for the evaluation and management of certain STDs, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomonas, Syphilis and Herpes. We will review incidence, clinical presentation, diagnosis and both prescription and supportive management as appropriate. This workshop will provide an in-depth look at the infections, with the goal of increasing the participant's clinical knowledge of STDs. There will be time allotted for a question and answer session.
