The Stupak-Pitts amendment violates the underlying principle of health care reform, as articulated by President Obama, that “no one will lose the benefits they currently have.”
The truth is that under the Stupak-Pitts amendment, millions of women would lose benefits that they currently have and millions more would be prohibited from getting the kind of private sector health care coverage that most women have today. To put a fine point on it, millions of women would lose private coverage for abortion services and millions more would be prohibited from buying it even with their own money. Simply put, women’s access to private coverage for abortion would be restricted by health care reform.

Vote in Every Election
Most voters only vote in national elections, but many state and local offices have direct influence over policies and practices that impact access to reproductive health care and sex education in schools. In off-year or primary elections, only about 20% of registered voters actually vote, which gives enormous power to only a handful of voters. Use Planned Parenthood as a resource to find out which offices are included in a particular election, who the candidates are and their position on choice. Know Your Elected Officials
Many of us don't know the name of our mayor or even the Georgia governor but it's easy to find out who these people are - especially with the Internet. As a voter, you will want to know them and they want to know you! Visit Project Vote Smart to find your federal and state officials. For other offices, such as city council, county supervisor or school board, visit the Georgia Secretary of State Web site and find your county elections office.
Women In The Halls Project
Women in the Halls, a special project of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of Georgia, seeks to bring more women to the state Capitol during the annual legislative session. Often, lawmakers overlook our concerns, and the resulting public policies can be disastrous for the women of Georgia.
