More than 3,000 Activists Raise Funds To Fight South Dakota Abortion Ban
Supporters Nationwide Energized in Support Of Women’s Health
Washington, DC — Last weekend (Sept. 29-Oct.1) pro-choice activists across the United States, as well as in Kenya and Tunisia, held potluck fundraisers to support the fight against South Dakota's abortion ban. Determined to protect women's health and safety, Planned Parenthood supporters organized 233 potluck events in 38 states — from Belfast, ME, to Davenport, IA, to Arcata, CA. Potluck themes ranged from luaus to turkey frys and took place in backyards, synagogues, parks, and homes. Similar fundraisers were held to oppose anti-choice initiatives in California and Oregon.
"Americans stood up for women's health last weekend. The South Dakota legislature went too far with this extreme law and the nation is responding to protect women's health and safety," said Stephenie Foster, PPFA vice president for public policy. "This weekend re-energized the pro-choice majority to fight for reproductive rights in their own communities, on behalf of South Dakota women, and nationwide."
Sarah Stoesz, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, was heartened by the enormous show of support: "South Dakotans from all walks of life who have come together to reverse this assault on reproductive health were inspired and renewed by this magnificent demonstration of grassroots support from around the country."
A statewide referendum to be held on November 7 will determine whether or not the South Dakota law goes into effect. The ban — a blatant challenge to Roe v. Wade — would criminalize abortion in all cases except when pregnancy threatens a woman's life.
