Planned Parenthood Joins Leadership Conference on Civil Rights
NEW YORK CITY — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is proud to announce that it has become a member of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR).
"This membership will open doors for all of the local Planned Parenthood affiliates to forge stronger alliances with other organizations committed to justice and equality in states and communities throughout the nation," said Jatrice Martel Gaiter, president and CEO, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC. "Our two organizations share a dedication to promoting human rights, as well as access for all Americans to quality health care and the ability to make personal health care decisions free from government intrusion. It is a great honor to be a part of this historic coalition."
"The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and Planned Parenthood Federation of America have a shared vision for justice, freedom, and equality. For decades we have worked to create stronger communities and families," added PPFA President Cecile Richards.
Founded in 1950, LCCR is the nation's premier civil rights coalition and has coordinated the national legislative campaign on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. LCCR comprises more than 192 national organizations representing people of color, women, children, labor unions, individuals with disabilities, older Americans, major religious groups, the LGBTQ community, and civil liberties and human rights groups.
"We're delighted to welcome Planned Parenthood into the nearly 200-member LCCR family," said Wade Henderson, LCCR president. "Health care reform is the next frontier for the civil rights movement. We are confident that as one of the nation's leading health advocates, Planned Parenthood will be a strong ally in the push for working health care reform."
PPFA, which has a 90-year history of promoting human and civil rights, has partnered with LCCR on a range of issues in the past and looks forward to working with LCCR on both national and local issues going forward.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America is the nation's leading sexual and reproductive health care advocate and provider. We believe that everyone has the right to choose when or whether to have a child, and that every child should be wanted and loved. Planned Parenthood affiliates operate more than 860 health centers nationwide, providing medical services and sexuality education for millions of women, men, and teenagers each year. We also work with allies worldwide to ensure that all women and men have the right and the means to meet their sexual and reproductive health care needs.
