Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by infections thatare passed from one person to another during sexual contact.

Many STDs have no symptoms, sopeople who areinfected may not knowthey have an STDand unknowingly spread the infection to their partner.Lack of information, misconceptions and social stigma may keep people from getting tested.

There are many kinds of sexually transmitted diseases and infections. And they are very common. In fact, more than half of us will get one at some time in our lives.

The good news is we canprotect ourselves and each other from STDs. Practicing safer sex allows you to reduce your risk of gettingsexually transmitted diseases.Also if you've done anything that putsyou at risk of infection,getting tested allowsyou to get any treatmentsyou may need.

Currently, St. Louis has top rankings in chlamydia and gonorrhea, and is number five in the nation for syphilis and HIV.Last year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one in four teenage females, ages 14 to 19, has an STD. Of the approximately 19 million new STDs that occur every year in the United States, most will go undiagnosed.
