Sexuality Education at Planned Parenthood
 
At Planned Parenthood of East Central Michigan, we endorse a comprehensive and realistic sexual health education curricula through our education department, and have a variety of educational programs to meet your needs.  If you'd like a more formal educational experience, consider one of our classes below. Or if you'd like us to supply you with the tools needed to have a thoughtful discussion with your child, consider checking out an education toolkit from one of our health centers.  Learn more about our toolkits on the left side of this page.                      
 
Significant Adults and Pre-Teens Puberty Classes
This 2-hour course is designed for children between the ages of 9-13, and a significant adult in their lives, such as a parent, aunt, grandmother, guardian, or mentor.  The class opens communication between adolescents and their significant adults.  The adults are also given age-appropriate information to be shared with their children at each developmental stage.  
 
The class includes information on:
  • abstinence
  • anatomy and physiology
  • menstruation
  • nocturnal emissions
  • reproduction
  • physical changes during puberty
  • adult/teen communication skills
  • decision-making skills
Teen Talk
This 2-hour course is designed for young women and young men between the ages of 14-18, and a significant adult, such as their mother/father, aunt/uncle, grandmother/grandfather, guardian, or mentor.
It is designed to open communication between a parent and their teen, and provide the parent with age-appropriate information to be delivered to their teen at an appropriate developmental stage.
 
This class includes information on:
  • sexuality through the lifespan
  • mixed messages in the media
  • parent communication
  • abstinence; avoiding risky behaviors
  • contraception
  • using condoms
  • reproductive health
  • healthy relationships
Parents as Sex Educators
This class is designed to give parents the skills to communicate with their children about reproductive health and positive relationships.  The first phase of the class provides parents with the latest knowledge on reproductive health.  Participants will also learn communication skills, practicing these skills with our teenaged peer educators.  The group environment is designed to allow parents to turn to each other for continued support. 
 
The second phase is a follow-up class.  Parents will be given the opportunity to discuss the successes and challenges they face with the group and devise strategies to allow better communication with their children.   The class includes information on:
  • parent-child connection
  • listening skills
  • communication skills
  • contraception
  • sexually transmitted infections
  • condom use
  • sharing and examining values

Location:  Classes are held at the Evelyn Golden, M.D. Education within the Flint Health Center of Planned Parenthood, 3371 Beecher Rd., Flint, 48532. Or, Planned Parenthood educators are available to present this program at other locations by request.
